Film to look out for ...

Ten years in the making and culled from 5000 hours of footage, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC reveals the effect the web is having on our society, as seen through the eyes of “the greatest Internet pioneer you’ve never heard of”, artist, futurist and visionary Josh Harris. Award-winning director  Ondi Timoner (DIG! -- which also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 2004 -- making Timoner the only director to win that prestigious award twice) documented his tumultuous life for more than a decade to create a riveting, cautionary tale of what to expect as the virtual world inevitably takes control of our lives.

Harris, often called the “Warhol of the Web”, founded Pseudo.com, the first Internet television network during the infamous dot-com boom of the 1990s. He also curated and funded the ground breaking project “Quiet” in an underground bunker in NYC where over 100 people lived together on camera for 30 days at the turn of the millennium. With Quiet, Harris proved how we willingly trade our privacy for the connection and recognition we all deeply desire, but with every technological advancement such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, becomes more elusive. Through his experiments, including a six-month stint living with his girlfriend under 24-hour electronic surveillance which led to his mental collapse, Harris demonstrated the price we pay for living in public.

NYC Recess @ Governors Island

After the epic badminton showdown at GOVERNORS ISLAND with TRETORN last month, RECESS is back this SATURDAY AUGUST 22ND at COLONELS ROW from 12PM - 5PM, this time with a SANDPAPER PADDLE TABLE TENNIS challenge with PUMA, the true originals in the ping pong explosion (as it is affectionately known). The game itself is currently going through a renaissance in the US but for the RECESS showdown, we've decided to put a little twist on the game, a sandpaper version that will even the playing field, and more co-ed friendly. While 32 various teams from the creative community battle their way to the finals, there will also be open public tables to test your skill at the sport, paddles provided. LEGAMIN and VAN LEEUWEN ICE CREAM trucks, as well as FUNCTION DRINKS are back for food and refreshments to keep everyone hydrated and well fed. We've even got mini tables, frisbees and kites to keep the young ones entertained. And while you're out on the island, take a spin on the highly coveted series of PUMA BIOMEGA BIKES and test ride them, we promise it's going to change the way you feel about urban transportation! The crew from NO ORDINARY MONKEY will be on the musical decks.

The free ferry leaves the BATTERY MARITIME BUILDING in Lower Manhattan at 11am and every half hour after that. So don't miss out on all the action!

New site specific works from Berlin, Germany on the BERLIN WALL. This year marks the 20 year anniversary of the BERLIN WALL falling! Enjoy the symbolism, irony, and gesture of unity from the extending arm reaching through the hole in the wall offering flowers to the other side "Bridging The Divide" between the East and West side of Berlin.

823 Key Project

WHAT IS 823KEYPROJECT?
21,398 keys, 26 artist grants, one vision: 823KEYPROJECT. It’s about uniting 823 people—and the work of one enterprising artist—through a common pulse, a thread that links the contribution and purchases of many to the creation of one vision. Through a series of one-of-a-kind, vintage, handmade, skeleton-key necklaces, 823KEYPROJECT will grant musicians and writers, painters and photographers, travelers and revelers the proverbial key to showcase their unique interpretation of the world with an emphasis on authentic and community-minded work.

HOW DOES 823KEYPROJECT WORK?
The money from your purchase of one of the 823KEY neckpieces will be placed into a fund. Once the 823rd key is sold, that money becomes available to artists in the form of a grant. The grant will be awarded to an artist or artists whose vision of a more beautiful world frames a broader perspective of life while redefining art (SEE GRANTS SECTION TO APPLY FOR A GRANT). The 823 keyholders will forever be tied to the project—and one another—not only through monetary contributions and a neckpiece, but also through artist updates, show openings, and project developments.

PURCHASE A KEY
Each 823 key purchased is one of a kind found objects ranging in date from 1830 to 1940. They are all unique and range from 3” to 4.5” in length. They are hung from a brass chain with a strongly unique brass twist clasp. Each key comes with a signature “823a” pewter tag that officially threads the keyholder (you) through the community of reverie, supporting the creation of the art, artist or artists once the last key is sold.

etnies presents the CINEMA: screening of BATTLE IN SEATTLE

etnies presents the CINEMA: a unique film series featuring award winning independent films and live Q+A sessions with the people behind the films

etnies invites you to a screening of BATTLE IN SEATTLE starring Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Rodriguez, Channing Tatum, Ray Liota, Martin Henderson, Andre Benjamin.

The screening will be followed by an informal Q + A with the Director & Writer Stuart Townsend

Friday, May 1st at the Yost Theater

307 N. Spurgeon St.
Santa Ana, CA 92701
8pm - 11pm

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
In 1999, five days rocked the world as tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Seattle in protest of the World Trade Organization. Among them are Django (Andre Benjamin), Sam (Jennifer Carpenter), Lou (Michelle Rodriguez) and Jay (Martin Henderson). United in their desire to be heard and to make a difference, for these protesters, this is very personal and the stakes are higher than mere politics. A peaceful demonstration to stop the WTO talks quickly escalates into a full-scale riot and an eventual State of Emergency results. The streets are mayhem, the WTO is paralyzed. Caught in the crossfire are Seattle residents, including its beleaguered mayor (Ray Liotta), a riot cop on the streets (Woody Harrelson) and his pregnant wife (Charlize Theron). The choices they make will change their lives forever.

Please RSVP on Facebook!

Movie Time With Beautiful/Decay

I'll be honest, I'm not really a huge fan of Beautiful Decay but I'm kind of feelin' these movie themed events. Check em out!

Beginning May 6th, we will screen a new art-based movie each Wednesday during the month of May at Space 15Twenty. This selection of films showcases a stunning array of creative concepts and ideas hand picked by us here at Beautiful/Decay!

We kick off with Loic Prigent’s behind-the-scenes documentary, “Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton” delving into Marc Jacobs’ busy creative life, and featuring appearances by Victoria Beckham, Uma Thurman and other fashion-forward Hollywood starlets.

This is a one of a kind opportunity to watch these movies outdoors and on the big screen! Popcorn and drinks will be available.

Watch a clip of the Marc Jacobs + Louis Vuitton documentary here.
